"American youth soccer players have great potential, and we’re eager to explore the opportunities they bring to our club."
Success in Germany
Borussia Mönchengladbach is one of the most successful football clubs in Germany.
Nicknamed DieFohlen [diː ˈfoːlənn] (The Foals), the club is world renowned for its free, fast, and young football style.
Youth Training Center: Building Block of Success
Youth development plays a major role in the history of Borussia Mönchengladbach, because with young players and fresh attacking soccer, we became the legendary Foals in the 1960s and 70s, who caused a sensation beyond the borders of the country.
Today, we see it as an important task to continue on this Borussia path and develop players for our own licensed team. The transition from youth to professional level is an important part of Borussia’s philosophy. Our youth development center (NLZ) is an important building block for success.
With this approach, we have supported and accompanied well-known players on
their way to professional soccer: Lothar Matthäus, Stefan Effenberg, Marcell Jansen, Mahmoud Dahoud, Marc-Andréter Stegen, Julian Korb, Tony Jantschke and Patrick Herrmann are just a few of them.
Fundamentals Of Our Work
The development of young talent at Borussia’s youth academy is age-independent and training-oriented. This means that VfL talents are encouraged and challenged according to their abilities.
Soccer training is strictly focused on the young footballer and across all teams. The training and development of the talent is clearly more important than the success of individual teams.
However, training must always take place at the highest level. That is why, despite all the personal development, it must be ensured that the players remain in the top divisions with the performance teams.
Game System & Variability
At the Foals’ youth academy, licensed and highly qualified coaches work according to a uniform and goal-oriented guideline.
This is based on Borussia’s basic philosophy of modern soccer with the following attributes: ball-oriented, offensive, active, creative. However, there is no uniform system of play in Borussia’s junior teams. Instead, great emphasis is placed on variability during training.
For the youngest teams, the focus is on enjoying the game and learning. The children should get to know the game and different positions. For this reason, there is no positional specialization at the basic level. The aim is to lay the foundation on which further development is possible.
In the development and performance area (from U14), some fixed points are anchored in the sporting guidelines, in the tactical principles and in the position specifications, but there is no general specification of a system here either. The aim is to provide multifunctional training for talented players.
In today’s world, trained players must be able to play several related positions. This can arise from the sporting situation on the pitch (trailing, leading, outnumbered, etc.), but also from the playing philosophy of the coach of the licensed team.
Values
Borussia wants to shape its talented players into personalities both on and off the pitch.
In developing the players’ personalities, the club focuses on the qualities of discipline, will, tolerance, respect, willingness to learn, and assertiveness.
Character traits are just as important in everyday life as they are in sport. These characteristics are depicted in Borussia’ virtue diamond.
"The U.S. is home to many promising talents, and we’re excited to identify players who fit our club’s philosophy and playing style."
"We are excited to partner with International Soccer Academy to bring talented American youth soccer players to Borussia Mönchengladbach."
With the diamond over the heart, the motto for this club is to always give its all. Borussia Mönchengladbach plays football with courage and ambition — leaving it all on the field.
In the black, white and green, we tirelessly walk the Borussia Way. With a self-determined, forward-looking, clear-eyed attitude.
"Borussia Mönchengladbach empowers young players through elite training, cultural immersion, and personal growth."
