MICHAEL SCAVUZZO

UEFA B Licensed Coach | International Soccer Academy

Michael Scavuzzo is a UEFA B licensed coach and former professional footballer whose career pathway reflects the international development model promoted by International Soccer Academy (ISA).

Having progressed through elite U.S. youth academies before pursuing professional opportunities in Europe, Scavuzzo experienced firsthand what many ambitious North American players aspire to achieve: the opportunity to train and compete in Europe and ultimately earn the chance to play professionally.

Like many talented young players growing up in the United States, Michael dreamed of one day being paid to play soccer in Europe — particularly in Germany, one of the world’s most respected football development environments. Through determination, international training opportunities, and professional trials, that dream eventually became reality.

Today, he works with International Soccer Academy players who are exploring opportunities such as a soccer gap year in Europe, helping guide North American athletes as they transition into the intensity, culture, and expectations of elite European football.

From Elite U.S. Youth Soccer to Professional Academy Pathways

Scavuzzo began his development in Southern California’s highly competitive youth soccer environment, first playing for San Diego Surf, one of the region’s most respected youth clubs.

He later continued his development with Albion SC San Diego, competing at the highest levels of American youth soccer while attracting attention for his physical presence and attacking ability as a forward.

His development continued at the Barça Residency Academy in Arizona, one of the most recognized residential soccer academies in the United States designed to prepare players for collegiate and professional opportunities.

Scavuzzo was later recruited by Sporting Kansas City Academy, part of Major League Soccer’s elite youth development system, where he trained in a professional academy structure that emphasized tactical intelligence, technical development, and high-performance training standards.

Choosing the European Pathway After High School

Like many elite players of his generation, Scavuzzo’s college pathway was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After earning a Division I scholarship, uncertainty surrounding university seasons, training schedules, and competition forced many players to reconsider their development options.

Rather than remain in a disrupted college environment, Scavuzzo chose to pursue a different path — training and playing soccer in Europe after high school.

He joined the International Soccer Academy program with RCD Mallorca in Spain, where ISA players train inside the professional environment of a La Liga club while competing against European opposition.

For many American players, ISA represents a unique opportunity to take a soccer gap year in Europe, gaining international experience while continuing to develop in professional training environments.

During his time in Mallorca, Scavuzzo impressed coaches with his professionalism, work ethic, and attacking instincts. He was recognized as the Most Valuable Player within the ISA program, attracting attention from clubs within ISA’s European network.

From ISA to Playing Football in Germany

Following his strong performances in Spain, Scavuzzo earned several professional trials arranged through International Soccer Academy’s network of coaches and clubs across Europe.

These opportunities ultimately led to him signing with Greifswalder FC in Germany, competing within the German football pyramid.

For Scavuzzo, signing in Germany represented the realization of a dream shared by many young players — the chance to earn a professional contract and experience the culture of European football firsthand.

Training and competing in Germany exposed him to the tactical discipline, physical intensity, and professionalism that define the European professional game.

His experience illustrates how international development opportunities can open doors for players who aspire to play soccer in Europe after high school.

Scavuzzo’s journey also reflects the type of international pathway International Soccer Academy was created to support. By connecting talented North American players with professional club environments across Europe, ISA provides opportunities for players to train, compete, and gain exposure within the global football system — experiences that can open doors to professional trials, collegiate opportunities, and long-term player development.

UEFA Coaching Education and Player Development

Following his playing experience in Europe, Scavuzzo transitioned into coaching and player development.

He earned his UEFA B Coaching License, one of Europe’s respected coaching qualifications, allowing him to work within professional academies and high-performance player development environments.

His international playing experience combined with formal coaching education allows him to help guide young players who aspire to pursue professional opportunities abroad.

Mentoring Players Pursuing a Soccer Gap Year in Europe

At International Soccer Academy, Scavuzzo works closely with players exploring the same pathway he once pursued — training and playing soccer in Europe after high school.

Many ISA players consider the program as a soccer gap year in Europe, allowing them to:

• Train with professional European clubs
• Experience daily high-performance training environments
• Compete against international opposition
• Develop within authentic professional football cultures
• Prepare for collegiate soccer or professional opportunities

Having personally navigated the transition from American youth soccer to European football, Scavuzzo provides ISA players with valuable insight into what it takes to succeed in these environments.

Supporting the Next Generation of International Soccer Players

International Soccer Academy staff members work closely with players who aspire to play soccer in Europe, whether their goal is collegiate soccer, professional opportunities, or international development experience.

Through ISA’s partnerships with professional clubs in La Liga, the Bundesliga, and other European leagues, players gain exposure to authentic training environments that reflect the standards of elite football development.

ISA programs are designed for ambitious players who want to challenge themselves, improve their game, and experience the professional football culture that has developed many of the world’s top players.

Is a Soccer Gap Year in Europe the Right Path?

For many talented North American players, the traditional pathway after high school has often meant choosing between college soccer or ending their competitive development. Increasingly, however, families are exploring the option of a soccer gap year in Europe as a way for players to continue developing in high-performance environments while gaining international experience.

Michael Scavuzzo understands this decision personally. After earning a Division I scholarship during the pandemic, he chose to pursue an international development pathway instead — training in Spain through International Soccer Academy before earning professional opportunities in Germany.

His journey reflects why many players and families now consider training and playing soccer in Europe after high school. A structured international development year can provide exposure to professional coaching, daily competitive training environments, and the culture of European football — experiences that help ambitious players continue progressing in the game.
