IOANNIS GRIGORAKIS
Senior Physiotherapist | Girona FC C Team
Ioannis Grigorakis serves as Senior Physiotherapist for the Girona FC “C” Team, overseeing the launch of the International Soccer Academy’s Integrated Gap Year Academy team in Spain.
He previously supported ISA’s Pro Pathway Program in Berlin and served as the physiotherapist for ISA’s Integrated Academy Team at Hertha BSC. Across these roles, Ioannis has helped international players manage their health, recovery and injury rehabilitation while adapting to the demands of living and training abroad.
A licensed physiotherapist educated at the University of Thessaly, Ioannis combines clinical rehabilitation expertise with multiple seasons of experience supporting players in elite European football environments. His professionalism, approachable personality and commitment to player welfare have made him one of the most trusted members of the ISA staff.
Supporting Players in European Football Environments
Ioannis understands the physical demands placed on players who train multiple times each week while competing against strong European opposition.
He works closely with coaches, performance staff and medical professionals to monitor player wellness, identify physical concerns early and coordinate appropriate treatment and recovery strategies.
His responsibilities include:
– Injury assessment and treatment
– Recovery planning and preventative care
– Rehabilitation support
– Player wellness monitoring
– Therapeutic exercise
– Mobility and flexibility work
– Return-to-training guidance
– Coordination with coaches and medical professionals
– First aid and immediate player care
By integrating physiotherapy into the daily team environment, Ioannis helps players remain available for training, recover more effectively and take greater responsibility for their physical health.
Supporting Player Health in Professional Training Environments
Before joining International Soccer Academy, Ioannis gained experience working in physiotherapy practices in Greece. He assessed and treated patients managing a broad range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
His clinical experience includes:
– Anterior cruciate ligament injuries
– Shoulder and upper-limb conditions
– Lumbar and cervical spine pain
– Tendon and overuse injuries
– Fractures and post-injury rehabilitation
– Sports-related muscle and joint injuries
– Neurological conditions
– Mobility and functional limitations
This diverse background strengthened his ability to evaluate individual needs and develop rehabilitation strategies based on careful assessment, communication and personalized care.
An Evidence-Based Approach To PT for College Age Soccer Players
Ioannis earned his physiotherapy degree from the University of Thessaly’s Department of Physiotherapy.
His academic research examined how fatigue affects proprioception—the body’s ability to recognize its position and movement. Proprioception plays an important role in balance, coordination, joint stability and injury prevention, particularly for soccer players performing repeated movements under fatigue.
His approach emphasizes:
– Careful assessment before treatment
– Exercise-based rehabilitation
– Progressive return to activity
– Movement quality and joint control
– Player education
– Consistent communication with coaching staff
– Evidence-based injury-prevention strategies
Rather than focusing only on immediate symptoms, Ioannis helps players understand the underlying factors that can influence their health and performance.
Recovery and Injury Prevention for Gap Year Footballers in Europe
In an elite player-development environment, physiotherapy extends far beyond treating injuries after they occur.
Ioannis helps players build daily habits that support injury prevention and recovery. These include communicating physical concerns early, completing prescribed rehabilitation exercises, maintaining mobility and consistently following recovery protocols.
Through education and individualized support, he encourages players to become active participants in their health. Players learn that preparation, communication and consistency can help prevent a manageable concern from becoming a longer absence from training.
A Trusted Mentor for ISA Players
Ioannis’s contribution to International Soccer Academy extends beyond physiotherapy.
Relocating to Europe is a significant transition for youth and gap-year players. Ioannis takes pride in supporting athletes as they adapt to the responsibilities, expectations and challenges of an international residential soccer program.
His calm demeanor and approachable personality help players feel comfortable discussing physical concerns and the personal challenges that can accompany living away from home. Building this trust is essential: athletes are more likely to communicate honestly, follow rehabilitation plans and ask for help when they know the staff member supporting them is genuinely invested in their progress.
For multiple seasons, ISA players have consistently recognized Ioannis for the quality of his care and dedication to their well-being.
Continued Professional Development
Ioannis remains committed to advancing his knowledge of physiotherapy, sports medicine and athlete rehabilitation.
He regularly participates in professional-development opportunities focused on player care, recovery and performance. His additional training includes Basic Life Support and First Aid, ensuring he is prepared to respond when players require immediate assistance.
Through continued education, clinical expertise and daily mentorship, Ioannis helps ISA players stay healthy, recover responsibly and make the most of their opportunity to develop in European football.
Supporting International Soccer Academy Players
As part of the ISA staff, Ioannis helps ensure that players training in the Pro Pathway program in Berlin receive professional-level medical support while pursuing opportunities in European football.
Through ISA’s partnerships with professional clubs in the Bundesliga and La Liga, players train in authentic football environments that demand high physical standards. Ioannis’s expertise in physiotherapy and athlete care helps players stay healthy, recover effectively, and perform at their best.
For players pursuing the next step in their soccer journey, having dedicated medical and recovery support is a critical component of long-term development and success.
