GEORGE VARVERAKIS
Sports Physiotherapist | Borussia Mönchengladbach Integrated Academy Team
Competitive youth soccer players in a professional football residency program at a top Bundesliga club in Germany deserve and require support on and off the field.
Helping players minimize the risk of injuries, recover effectively and adapt to the physical demands of elite European football is essential to long-term player development.
Georgios “George” Varverakis serves as Sports Physiotherapist and Assistant Team Director for the International Soccer Academy Integrated Academy Team in partnership with Borussia Mönchengladbach. He combines advanced education in sports physiotherapy with clinical experience in injury assessment, rehabilitation, emergency care and athlete support.
George holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Physiotherapy from the Real Madrid Graduate School at Universidad Europea de Madrid. His graduate research focused on exercise-based injury-prevention programs and their effectiveness in reducing ankle injuries among soccer players.
In his dual role with International Soccer Academy, George helps support player health, injury prevention and recovery while also assisting with the daily care and supervision of players living and training in Germany.
Advanced Education in Sports Physiotherapy
George earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Thessaly’s School of Health Sciences before completing his advanced graduate studies in Madrid.
His master’s program provided specialized education in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. His studies included football injury rehabilitation, dry needling, aquatic recovery, therapeutic percutaneous electrolysis, strength and conditioning, and evidence-based injury-prevention strategies.
George has also completed specialized training in:
– Advanced rehabilitation of hip injuries in football
– The FIFA 11+ injury-prevention program
– Strength and conditioning for sports physiotherapists
– Tendinopathy assessment and rehabilitation
– Dry needling
– Sports-injury recovery in aquatic environments
– Pilates floor and reformer methods for health professionals
– Musculoskeletal ultrasound and clinical assessment
– Guided therapeutic percutaneous electrolysis
This combination of academic study and practical training allows George to approach player care from both a clinical and high-performance perspective.
Supporting Player Health and Recovery
Players training in a Bundesliga club environment face demanding schedules that require consistent physical preparation, recovery and injury-management support.
George works with players to help them understand the importance of taking care of their bodies before, during and after training. His approach includes physical assessment, therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation support, progress monitoring and education on self-management strategies.
His areas of focus include:
– Injury assessment and initial management
– Exercise-based injury prevention
– Individualized rehabilitation programs
– Recovery planning
– Therapeutic exercise
– Mobility and flexibility
– Musculoskeletal care
– Player wellness monitoring
– Return-to-training support
– First aid and emergency response
By identifying concerns early and coordinating with the coaching and performance staff, George helps players maintain consistency and safely manage the physical demands of training and competition.
Clinical and Emergency-Care Experience
George has gained experience working with patients and athletes in clinical, hospital, military and competitive-sport environments.
At Elite Physiotherapy and Recovery in Chania, Crete, he conducted physical assessments and helped develop personalized treatment plans based on each patient’s condition and recovery goals. His responsibilities included therapeutic exercise, physical modalities, progress monitoring and patient education.
During his physiotherapy internship at the General Hospital of Chania, George assisted with—and independently managed—cases involving musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological conditions. This hospital experience strengthened his clinical decision-making and ability to work within a multidisciplinary medical team.
George has also supported a medical unit within the Hellenic Army, providing primary assessment and care for musculoskeletal injuries. His work included managing acute and urgent cases, monitoring injured personnel, supporting rehabilitation follow-up and assisting with first aid and emergency-response procedures.
This broad clinical background helps him respond calmly and effectively when players require immediate assessment or ongoing rehabilitation support.
Experience Supporting Competitive Athletes
In addition to his clinical work, George has provided voluntary physiotherapy support at marathons, mountain-running competitions and road races in Greece and Spain.
At these events, he assisted athletes with injury prevention, pre-race assessments, on-site care and post-race recovery. He also provided first aid when necessary and offered rehabilitation guidance to help participants manage soreness, mobility restrictions and sports-related injuries.
Working directly with endurance athletes in live competition environments strengthened George’s ability to make timely decisions while supporting athletes under physical stress.
Research and Evidence-Based Practice
George is committed to evidence-based physiotherapy and continued professional development.
His undergraduate research examined the reliability and validity of the Athletic Shoulder Test in adolescent tennis players. The research was presented at the Annual Panhellenic Physiotherapy Congress and later published in the peer-reviewed *Journal of Clinical Medicine*.
His graduate thesis examined whether exercise-based injury-prevention programs can reduce ankle injuries in soccer players through a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.
This research background allows George to evaluate new treatment and injury-prevention approaches critically and apply current scientific evidence to his work with athletes.
